THE EXPEDITION
HOW:

FROM EXPLOITATION TO REGENERATION:
We won't solve exponential challenges with incremental approaches. We need to move from separate solutions, finite value chains and exploitive systems that extracts recourses - to exosystemic approaches with regenerative value systems that goes beyond the ability to sustain and reverse climate impact through being Net Positive.

THE NEXT STEP:
This Next Step builds a Triple - Matrix Pilot System that builds and tests out 3 Lenses of Innovation across 3 Contexts and Pilot sites. Through this matrix system, we enable learning exchange, co-creation and development - combining the similarities of what is shared with the uniqueness that each context offers to design and construct resilient and regenerative net positive solutions and systems.
AN INNOVATION GRID: THE TRIPLE MATRIX PILOT SYSTEM:
This Pilot System creates a Innovation Grid where Technical, Community driven and Business Modell Innovation are woven together in a web across 3 Sites and contexts: an Urban mobile Pop-up station, a Rural School based community solution, and an Off Grid House hold based unit:

URBAN
Pop-up station in Boise

Built to test regeneration supplying a surplus of electric energy to enable a charging station

CO2 & CH4 negative
RURAL
School installation in NU

Built to test regeneration supplying a surplus of agriproducts, clean water, and financial subsidizing of school fees

CO2 & CH4 negative
OFF GRID
Household units in Stockholm

Built to test regeneration of nutrients for increased biodiversity through permaculture, enabling self reliance

CO2 & CH4 negative
Technical Innovation
SHARED

UNIQUE
Fundamentally the same XX technique.

- Construction materials will be locally sourced for reduced carbon footprint.
- Distribution and treatment value systems will vary to optimize the contextual prerequisites.
COMMUNITY DRIVEN INNOVATION
SHARED

UNIQUE
All three sites will be driven by user based feedback; departing from the same base line survey

Further developed based on local needs and behaviors - as well as scaled through advocacy and exchange between municipal and governmental leaders.
BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION
sHARED

UNIQUE
The business models for all contexts are designed to enhance adaptation and scale through lower upfront investment levels (e.g. through sanitation loans) and shortened ROI cycles, leading to a net positive financial incentive to invest. All business models are also designed to create win-win-win incentives to regenerative value systems (e.g. incl. water harvesting, installation and maintenance, bi product distribution) with further stakeholders, which too fuels the rational to scale.

Based on intersection of the user and stakeholder needs/demands and the respective micro climate and bio system resources the business model is optimized to find regenerative product/market fits. Regenerative in the sense that the running of the system and business model inevitably enhances the system; generating an ever more recilient and growing social, financial and environmental surplus.
CHALLENGE

Why:

According to recent reports, 103 countries are unlikely to meet the Agenda 2030 implementation target for Water and Sanitation. One of the main challenges is a staggering 61% funding gap between the funds needed to achieve SDG 6 and the funds allocated.
However, what is even more concerning is that IF that funding was made available and current sanitation solutions (such as flush toilets or pit latrines) were scaled to the 4.5 billion people who do not have access to safely managed sanitation today, we would do irreparable damage to the planet - conflicting directly with SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. This is because sewage systems flush the world’s most precious resource; Water, down the drain, and pit latrines contaminate groundwater. Also pit latrines have recently been discovered to be one of the greatest contributors to GreenHouseGas emissions in Uganda (where our project is based) because of the methane the pits expel.
With 6 in 10 people lacking access to safely managed sanitation facilities and 3 in 10 lacking access to safe drinking water globally it is clear the social, environmental & economic model for sustainably scaling sanitation is currently broken.

AMBITION

What:

Expedition Shift the System departs from the Paid-to-Poop project, which is setting out to address the complex and devastatingly underfunded global challenge: SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. And in doing so, building a pioneering ecosystem that also accelerates the progress towards all of the SDGs.
As a diverse constellation of actors across Uganda and Sweden, we are testing a hypothesis that flips the traditional water and sanitation model on its head, and explores the market potential of what we believe could be the world’s most overlooked resource - human waste.
Our Hypothesis: What if the human waste of today became the ultimate renewable resource of tomorrow? This project sets out to unlock the intrinsic value of the 3.8 trillion litres of Toilet Resources (human waste) created each year (500 L p.p./a x 7.6 billion global population).
Through this disruptive innovation concept we aim to simulate a regenerative net positive value system that explores : “What if people could be paid-to-poop?” Together we will simulate what a potentially scalable, replicable & sustainable approach to sanitation, water and climate innovation could look like, through the lens of the 3 integrated innovation pillars mentioned above.
By modeling a community-owned sustainable, and entrepreneurial approach to regenerative systems, with this project we aim to start by testing the paid-to-poop’s disruptive innovation capacities with the Triple Matrix Pilot mentioned above - and with that as a powerful base, develop and scale further, continuously pushing the horizon of what we can (re)imagine and build:
Triple Matrix Pilot System
-
TECH INNOVATION: Testing waterless container based toilet units that reduce risk of groundwater contamination whilst increasing the nutrient lead of fertiliser.

-
COMMUNITY DRIVEN INNOVATION: Developing a community-owned and led circular sanitation value chain that transforms human waste into agricultural products such as fertilizer and briquettes, generating economic growth for the communities through entrepreneurship initiatives.

-
BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION: Exploring innovative economic & finance models such as sewage epidemiology services, sanitation impact bonds, micro-finance and carbon offset credits as additional revenue streams.
